Jan. 8 Full Moon in Cancer

During the Cancer Full Moon, it is imperative that we care for ourselves. Take the time you need to relax and enjoy life. Think of a time when you have felt deeply nurtured, when you knew you could surrender into the arms of a loving parent or friend, when you knew that you were loved without expectations. That is the gift you are being asked to provide for yourself during this Full Moon.

With Mercury forming a close-to-exact waning square to Uranus during the Full Moon, we are at a crisis of integration of ideas. New possibilities and avenues of thought have been introduced from the higher realm of Uranian inspiration and wisdom, and now we must decide what to do with them in the everyday world of Mercurial mental processes. The powerful choice is to decide to trust them. To decide means to “cut away.” In this case, we are cutting away the ideas and beliefs that no longer serve the greatest good, and integrating the new ideas into our everyday habits.

Jupiter and Saturn continue their opposition, as we continue to experience the polarity between expansion and contraction, effort and abundance, faith and discipline. Venus is conjunct (next to) Neptune in late Aquarius, highlighting a need to surrender (Neptune) to beauty (Venus). Because these two planets trine Saturn, we are invited to see the beauty within our limitations (Saturnian obstacles). With a trine, it can be tempting to take the easy road to substitution-related escapism (e.g. substituting substances for spirituality, sugar for nurturing, meaningless sex for emotional connection). But conscious awareness of appropriate boundaries (Saturn) and your connection to divinity (Neptune) will fuel your ability to receive heart-full abundance (Jupiter).

What you intended at the New Moon in Capricorn is being revealed through your intuition. Pay special attention to how your body responds, and to how things feel. These are messages in direct answer to your requests, and they will guide you to the next phase on your journey.

Dec. 24 New Moon in Capricorn

Capricorn is the mountain goat, reminding us that our struggles are helping us ascend to a higher place. It is also the wise elder and the hermit and assists us in going deep within to connect with our inner wisdom. Falling three days after the winter solstice, the Dec. 24 Capricorn New Moon helps us take advantage of the darkness. We have the opportunity for deep release and surrender to the quiet mystery of who we are. This month’s New Moon is also conjunct Pluto, enhancing themes of death of the old to make way for rebirth of the new.

The New Moon squares Uranus in the first degree of Aries, making sudden and unexpected changes more likely than usual. The Capricorn energies will support us and help us ride out these storms, but not without our conscious choices. We must remember to breathe, eat on time, get enough rest, and honor life’s unavoidable requirement for quiet time.

Saturn and Jupiter are still opposing one another, continuing the theme of a push and pull between effort and expansiveness, limitations and optimism. This polarity teaches us that true expansive abundance comes from our own inner wisdom and authority. We are invited to more deeply understand what it means to set appropriate boundaries.

Jupiter stations direct on Christmas day, bringing expansion and abundance to whatever you have been focusing on. As it moves from retrograde to direct motion, gratitude for what you have will expand by bringing you more of what you are grateful for. On the other hand, a focus on what you do not have or appreciate will bring more of the same.

During this holiday season, the universe is supporting you in clearing out old habits and patterns that keep you limited. However, you are not required to have it all figured out. Sometimes the simplest answers are the most powerful: be grateful for what you have, love yourself, and be genuine. Your sincere efforts are greatly rewarded.

Dec. 10 Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse in Gemini

With the Gemini Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse, the wave initiated at the Sagittarius New Moon and Solar Eclipse is cresting. If you set your intentions and opened yourself to a new story, pay close attention as hints of it are being revealed. If you did not consciously set intentions, pay attention anyway. Pay attention to what intrigues you, what you are curious about, what you might not have considered before now. The most powerful messages do not come the way we expect them to.

Mars forms a t-square (90 degrees away from both) with Sun and Moon, generating frustration around moving forward, and getting bogged down in details (Mars in Virgo). The purpose of this frustration is to help you shift your consciousness and see the bigger picture. Take a break and remember why you are doing this, then ask if there is an easier way.

Saturn and Jupiter are in opposition, highlighting the conflict between faith and practical necessity, between rose-colored glasses and hard reality, between a belief that you deserve abundance and fear that you are not good enough. To re-frame this conflict, allow new possibilities to enter your thoughts. Consider these: Through the process of seeking abundance I learn to be my own authority. Structure and discipline support my overwhelming success. Through knowing lack, I learn compassion and generosity.

A Lunar Eclipse is a gateway when potent messages are unveiled. In Gemini we embody the archetype of a curious child. Additionally, during this Full Moon Mercury (lower mind) is trine Uranus (higher mind), whose potency is heightened by a direct station (Uranus changing directions to forward motion). In short, the doorways are open to creative insight and inspiration. Take a moment during this Full Moon to set aside old thought patterns and open your mind. Then listen, and be willing to explore.

Nov. 24 New Moon and Solar Eclipse in Sagittarius

This week’s New Moon and Solar Eclipse in Sagittarius falls on Nov. 24 at 10:10 pm PST, Thanksgiving Day for those of us on the west coast, just hours after Mercury turns retrograde. Eclipses are powerful alignments that can only happen during a New or Full Moon. Essentially, what we choose and put out to the universe is reflected back to us in a magnified way during an eclipse. (See “What is an eclipse?” for details about how eclipses form.)

This New Moon takes place during a grand trine in Earth between Pluto (ultimate truth and ultimate desire), Jupiter (abundance, faith, optimism), and Mars (action, effort, will). With the Sun, Moon, Mercury, and Venus all in Sagittarius, we are questioning our beliefs and our stories. The grand trine supports our ability to access a new reality, a new way of being. We are being shown that trusting the authentic actions that emerge naturally from the truth will bring greater joy and abundance. We are being shown how to embody this reality, and how to be present to it in the world around us.

Because the results of our choices are magnified during an eclipse, it behooves us to set strong, clear, and conscious intentions. When we set intentions, there is no judgment. We are not evaluated on our performance, or whether or not something came to pass. Rather, it is simply a way to re-member and to state what we want and what we are willing to embody. The opposite of setting an intention is to be unconscious, and to repeat conditioned patterns. To the extent that we choose what feels “safe” the universe will reflect back to us where that choice is leading.

Mercury retrograde means that our thoughts and processes turn inward. The timing is perfect for opening space through conscious ritual, using anything from a group ceremony to meditating to simply lighting a candle or taking a deep breath. One way to do this is to simply ask: what is my story? And then let go of knowing the answer.

As you give thanks during this week’s holiday, remember to give thanks for who, what, where, and why you are. And be willing for the answers to these questions to change. The gift of the present moment is the doorway to a brand new future.

Nov. 10 Full Moon in Taurus

During the Full Moon in Taurus, we are invited to experience universal mysteries through our senses. Potent truths are being revealed through tangible, material, physical reality. This brings the potential for anything from an incredible meal or great sex to creative breakthroughs and discovering new solutions to old problems. Open yourself to the new possibilities being offered to you.

This Full Moon takes its place one day after Neptune stations direct, or switches from moving backward (retrograde) to forward through the zodiac. While Neptune changes directions, it hovers at the same point for a few days. This standstill will make reality feel quite dreamy. To align with the Full Moon energy during the Neptune station, think of the state you are in when you have a very vivid dream. Physical objects, events, and reality itself take on a heightened significance because of your state of awareness. Events during this Full Moon will have this same quality.

Adding to this effect, Mars is in late Leo opposing Neptune. This opposition causes us to feel pulled in two directions: dreamy and spiritual or escapist (Neptune station) vs. making big bold moves or perhaps indulging in attention-seeking behaviors (Mars in Leo). Within a few hours of the exact Full Moon, Mars will shift into Virgo. Therefore we are also transitioning from Mars in Leo, which is expressive and dramatic action and movement, to Mars in Virgo, where we will roll up our sleeves and dig in to the details of the work at hand.

Once Mars moves into Virgo, it will complete a grand trine in Earth with Pluto and Jupiter, repeating the themes from earlier this year of bringing abundance through creative new forms. Open your senses during this Full Moon, and surrender to greater truths. Make sure you take care of your physical needs, and do what you need to do to stay grounded. Then open up and drink in Neptune’s vibe of unity and connection.

Oct. 26 Scorpio New Moon

During the Scorpio New Moon we have an opportunity to go deep within ourselves. External events and situations are encouraging, if not forcing, us to surrender our ordinary concerns, worries, and obligations. To best align with this energy, we must enter the dark cave of not-knowing.

This surrender can feel easy and natural, like a return to home. It can also feel scary and dangerous. You may experience either or both ends of the spectrum. Death and regeneration is a natural part of the life cycle, so as you recognize what is dying within you and release it, remember to be kind to yourself. Entering the void that is left by its absence is deeply nourishing, and naked vulnerability in sacred space is exactly where you need to be in order to receive the gifts of the underworld as you are being prepared for rebirth.

Jupiter is opposite this New Moon, bringing a fear that if we let go of what no longer serves us, we will also let go of good fortune and abundance. However, Jupiter in Taurus is teaching us about receiving a new level of tangible rewards, and during the Scorpio New Moon, surrender to the unknown is how we get there.

Expressive and dramatic Mars in Leo is squaring (at odds with) Venus and Mercury conjunct (together) in Scorpio. The mind and the capacity for self-love are ready to go deep, while the need for action is outward and expressive. Embrace both needs as you surrender to your highest potential.

Finally, Neptune in late Aquarius is within orb of a trine to the Sun and Moon, enhancing our connection to spirit, oneness, and the other side of the veil. This is not the time to understand, but to feel. Enjoy this retreat, and allow yourself to receive the deep nourishment of the Earth as you put down roots now that will allow you to blossom when the time is right.

Oct. 11 Aries Full Moon

During the annual Aries Full Moon, the need for action and renewed courage is highlighted. Since we live in times of warp-speed change, the Aries mandate for self-centered action and the willingness to try new things can be confusing. We feel the impulse to do things differently, and yet reality sets in and change feels overwhelming and impossible.

The crucial message in the background of this Full Moon is that reality itself is changing. It is no longer as rigid as we assume it to be. We are reaching the end of the Mayan calendar, Pluto in Capricorn is now direct, Uranus is once again in the very early degrees of Aries, and Neptune will soon enter Pisces.

Saturn in Libra makes us feel as though we must compromise our individual needs in order to meet the needs of humanity. However, the deeper message is that by being true to who we are, we best serve our fellow humans and the Earth herself. Rather than continuing to make yourself “fit in” to an outmoded reality, allow yourself to be who you are and let reality adjust accordingly!

What kind of person would you need to be to stand up for what you believe in? The word “courage” comes from a word that means “heart.” During this Full Moon, imagine that you are a warrior going into battle for your most cherished truths and your deepest desires. For some of us, it may mean fighting a literal battle, for others, it may mean refusing to fight any longer. Pay attention to the messages and feedback the universe offers. Let go of trying to be who you think you should be and give yourself the gift of being who you are.

Sept. 27 New Moon in Libra

During this New Moon in Libra, we are asked to allow in a deeper understanding of what “balance” means. With the long-term configuration of Uranus in early Aries squaring Pluto in Capricorn, there is an evolutionary mandate – a cosmic pressure – to authentically express our individuality, our uniqueness, and our truth. During this New Moon, what opposes (both astronomically and psychologically) our “Uranus” (freedom and individuality) is the Sun, Moon, and Mercury conjunct in Libra. Let us break it down to see how we can use this information to align with positive growth and change.

The Sun is the Center. It is the organizing principle of all parts of the psyche, both the reason and the technique for unfolding our life purpose. In Libra, this Center needs to find the place of balance, of harmony. It needs to resonate with its own true nature. So you can ask yourself, “what is my truth?” “how am I in alignment with it and how am I not?” and “what would I need to release in order to step into my center of power?”

The Moon is the Soul. It is the part of you that knows truth and not-truth, love and not-love, but cannot put these things into words. It feels. To access this part, it is essential to get out of your head and to feel deeply what is the right course of action, the right attitude, the right way of being that only your heart can know. Finding balance in this area is less about right and wrong and more about finding your own place of comfort and resonance.

Mercury is the Weaver. Balance for Mercury relates to the capacity to filter helpful information from old and tired messages that no longer serve us. How have you used your Mercury (communication and mental processing) function in the past? What information and messages are your beliefs and attitudes based on? Do you want to reconsider or reformulate any of these?

Saturn (structure, form, limits) and Venus (goddess, receiving, beauty) are also in Libra, conjunct one another several degrees away from the other three. Background themes of finding the right structure to express the divine feminine, as well as balance and harmony between masculine and feminine, guide our needs and decisions during this New Moon.

With the grouping in Libra opposite Uranus in Aries, we are being asked to integrate the need for self-assertion (Aries) with the need for harmony within the whole (Libra). In other words, as we move decisively with individual action and breakthroughs, the needs of others seem to “thwart” our forward momentum. On the other hand, excessive compromise in the area of self-expression does not serve the needs of the whole.

Healthy self-expression serves the group, and balance in the group serves the individual. Exploring how you understand (Sun), feel (Moon), and communicate (Mercury) helps to heal the self/relationship balance between Aries and Libra. And the personal intentions you set to find deeper balance serve the collective needs of humanity as a whole.

Sept. 12 Full Moon in Pisces

I am very intrigued at the fact that during this Full Moon, Mercury is in the same degree as the Sun/Moon at the last New Moon in Virgo. Mercury is stepping in to re-create the grand trine in Earth with Pluto and Jupiter that we experienced two weeks ago with the Sun and Moon. The planets tell a story, and Mercury is a weaver of realities.

During the Full Moon, what was intended at the New Moon is revealed. So in this case the conscious intentions we set, or the unconscious patterns we were immersed in, at the Virgo New Moon unfold in our experience during this Pisces Full Moon. This is especially true since the New Moon was part of a creative grand trine with Pluto (unconscious material) and Jupiter (abundance and optimism).

With Mercury stepping into the same degree as the New Moon that began the current cycle, our thoughts and beliefs about reality and the nature of what is possible are revealed. If you are paying attention, you will notice the sense of humor that Mercury has as it reflects your most deeply held beliefs back to you. If you are able to laugh at yourself, it means you are ready to transform.

On Saturday Sept. 10, two days before the Full Moon, I will be teaching a workshop on the Mercury Archetype. How fitting that it is speaking to all of us this week with its characteristic cleverness and trickery. Pisces is the water sign of infinite potential. Bring your attention to a new level of awareness, and notice how what you are going through right now shows you how you have created your own limitations. Then, when you are ready, let them go.
